>Blame NaNoWriMo

>Hey, folks. Sorry for the radio silence. American Thanksgiving, birthday celebrations, a wedding, and the end of NaNoWriMo all conspired to make sure that any time spent at my computer since last Thursday has been time in which I have been prying my daily words out of my brain in an increasingly desperate attempt to make it to the finish line. But look! I finished!

Yes I use a spreadsheet to track my words. I’m a giant nerd.

So now that that’s over with, I can now reclaim the mental bandwidth that was being consumed by NaNoWriMo. Hooray! I’ve been doing lots of research in the last little while and I promise I have lots of interesting stuff to rant about, including body customization, sexist webcomic ads, and Paizo. In the mean time, I don’t want to leave you empty handed. So here, gentle reader, is your daily dose of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

WTF the first:

Fair warning, unbelievably NSFW! Orgasm Girl – a flash game on New Grounds about a lesbian who goes around giving girls orgasms in their sleep. Apparently successful enough that it warranted a sequel, because there’s also an Orgasm Girl 2.

I’m afraid that I’ve spent a little too much time dragging prose out of my brain to mock this in a sufficiently scathing and intelligent manner. I’ll leave that task to you.

WTF the second:

How Fat Princess is blatantly better than feminism – a column on Destructoid by Jim Sterling.

This is seriously one of the most offensive and disgusting anti-feminist screeds that I have read since I started the research that wound up to me starting this blog. Among other things, he claims that feminism is bad for women as well as perpetuates the stereotype that feminists are humorless trolls who have no chance of finding a man. And then at the very end, he turns around and says surprise! This was all a joke! If you’re offended, clearly it just proves that everything men say about humorless feminists is true! Clearly that makes them blameless, right?

Well, except for the comments where readers fall all over themselves to say OMG THIS IS SO TRUE. Consider yourself on notice Jim Sterling – I’m adding you to my Google Alerts.

WTF the third:

(NSFW!!) Video Game Girls DB – proof that in every stereotype there is at least a small grain of truth.

Perhaps the creepiest masturbation aid I’ve ever encountered, this site lets you sort by hair color, eye color, measurements, breast size, and bounciness – among many other factors. Seriously? Yuck. Just… yuck.

  1. >I think the thing which annoys me about the "Video Game Girls" thing is that they have all these various slots, and for at least the few characters I've checked, a lot of details just aren't there – even though they're readily available in-game. Oh, they definitely have the boob info, but things like Nationality are blank for characters like Yuffie Kisaragi (who, it is heavily implied during the game, is the Crown Princess of the nation of Wutai on the world of Gaia) and Aerith Gainsborough (who they flat-out say is Cetra). Selphie Tilmitt is most likely either Trabian (by adoption) or Centran (by birth). Plus the grammar in the descriptions is frightening. About the only explanation I can think of is that they're not looking at the writing, they're too busy looking at the tits.

  2. Hi wundergeek. I only recently discovered your blog thanks to a link from the Something Awful forums, and I have been reading through your archives. I am a self-defined feminist, identify as female-bodied but non-gendered, and am currently on track for ordination in the United Methodist Church. My ministry focus is on issues related to gender and sexuality, with a specific passion for reproductive rights. I am also a gamer (tabletop and PC). In most situations I agree with you completely and find myself growing equally angry about a lot of the things you post about, but I take concern with your criticism of Orgasm Girl.

You may or may not know this, but there is a wide variety of flash games designed specifically as masturbatory aids… a lot of them involve aliens trying to rape women in their sleep, kidnapping women and sexually torturing them, and “putting women in their place” (one horrible game involves a woman showing up for her first day at a new secretary job and being told that if she doesn’t have sex with her boss, she will be fired).

The premise behind Orgasm Girl, while obviously pornographic, is on an entirely different level. The lesbian who goes around giving women orgasms is actually designed as an angel who is trying to give women a moment of pleasure. And while most of this genre of flash games simply require you to click through to watch the sex scenes, this one is actually extraordinarily difficult to play… you have to discover each girl’s unique erogenous zones and stimulate them appropriately in order to make her orgasm, and getting even one thing wrong causes you to fail.

I am not going to try to defend Orgasm Girl entirely, because there are obvious problems with it, but I do want to point out it’s positives. The point of the game is to give the woman pleasure, and to learn what specifically turns each girl on. And each girl is very different in that regard! Most of this genre focuses entirely on the man’s pleasure, while this is a refreshing change because the focus is entirely on what the woman wants! While I don’t want to put words in your mouth, I suspect your critique of the game has to do with the fact that the women are sleeping and unaware of what is going on. I understand that this is a problem, but I want to assert that this is one of the best games in the genre, and I myself was glad that there was a sequel. The fact that the game individuates the girls that are being objectified is already a major step in the right direction for this genre, as well as what I mentioned before about the focus being on the woman’s instead of the man’s pleasure.
